  A SNAIL FOR US

Dear friends, for the second year our firm received the "Slow Food Snail Award" among 173 Italian cellars. We are proud of this prize because it concerns the way we manage our cellar and the values we believe in. We also received an award called "Vino Slow" (slow wine) for our Amarone "Ca' Coato" (vintage 2007) and "Vino Quotidiano" (everyday wine) for our Valpolicella Classico (vintage 2009). You can taste our wines on the 23rd October in Milan during the presentation of the second edition of Slow Wine guide, made by Slow Food (Milano-Rho Fair - Atrio Sud) from 14.30 to 18.30.   THE HARVEST OF 2011

On the 1st September, 2 weeks earlier than usual, we started the harvest! On the 16th September we finished harvesting grapes for Amarone Ca 'Coato and started collecting the grapes for Amarone Moròpio. The year 2011 was very strange. It was very hot in April (if you remember, during Vinitaly it seemeed we were on Summer!) but the water didn't fail because in Winter it rained a lot. May was nice and warm, June and July temperate and it rained. The weather was wonderful until the 15th August, warm days and cool nights, but the last 15 days of August were torrid, so the grapes struggled to ripen. Luckily it rained 45 mm on the first days of September and those drops of waer were pure gold for us! The amount of grapes per hectare for luck is not abundant and the vines are pretty well able to overcome the crisis in late August. On the 18th September it rained and the temperature became mild: 17 consecutive days of harvest at 30° C were very heavy! I hoped that the weather remained cool for more time but temperatures were raised a few days after and the harvest finished on the 11st October without a drop of water.

Moròpio Vineyard: less production because of a light hail storm on the 27th May, grapes healthy and well nourished.

Ca' Coato Vineyard: normal year, some suffering on young vines.

Prognol Vineyard: low production because of the hailstorm on the 27th May; if it didnt't haile we would have had a great vintage!

St. Floriano Vineyard: good vintage with some pain on young vines.

I remember that we don't have irrigation, however, thanking the Lord, clay soils help us to overcome even the most difficult periods! We put out to dry for 50% of the crop We put to rest for make Amarone exactly 50% of the grapes, as required by the Regulations. Valpolicella wine is more alcohol and less astringent than the standard.
